How to Talk About Your Feelings When You Don’t Know Where to Start

Talking about feelings does not always come naturally. Sometimes you know something is wrong but cannot find the words to explain it. That is completely normal.

Start by naming what you notice

You do not need a perfect explanation. Begin with a simple observation such as “I have been feeling overwhelmed lately” or “I am not sure what I feel, but I would like to talk.”

Choose a person and place that feel safe

Think of someone who listens without rushing to judge or solve everything. A trusted friend, family member, teacher, mentor, or counsellor can be a good starting point.

Use a prompt when words feel difficult

A conversation card, journal question, or message can make the first step easier. Try asking: “Can I share something that has been on my mind?”

Opening up is not a sign of weakness. It is a way of understanding yourself and giving others the opportunity to support you.
